Students are expected to follow all requirements for their respective programs. Some programs allow students to take coursework outside their respective departments and even the school. Students who register for a course offered by another school at the University are subject to that school's registration policies and procedures.
Cross-Registration for SPS Students
Each program has specific policies regarding the number of courses allowed outside the department or school and the process for obtaining approval to cross-register. Failure to adhere to program requirements may result in the course not counting towards your degree. Please check with your advisor if you are unsure how many courses are allowed outside the program.
Schools that do not allow Cross-Registration from SPS Students:
College of Dental Medicine
College of Physicians and Surgeons
School of General Studies
School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation
Cross-Registration for Students outside of SPS
Cross-registration into School of Professional Studies courses requires written approval from both the instructor and your home institution Advisor or Academic Director. All non-SPS Columbia University students are expected to abide by the policies of the SPS Department/Program through which they take coursework. SPS courses listed in the Directory of Classes specify who is allowed to register. If you are unsure of the cross-registration procedure for a particular course, please contact the program's Advisor for more information.
Students at institutions with which Columbia has formal cross-enrollment arrangements—e.g., the Juilliard School and Union Theological Seminary—need not apply for admission to the School of Professional Studies.
Current Juilliard students must fulfill eligibility requirements listed out here and work with the Office of the Registrar to apply for cross-registration. Fill out Registration Adjustment Form and obtain the instructor's approval to cross-register for courses at Columbia. The completed form can be sent to the Registrar’s Office at ssc [[at]] columbia [[dot]] edu (ssc[at]columbia[dot]edu).
Union Theological Seminary should follow the policies and procedures listed on the following Union website.
