Careers at SPS
The School of Professional Studies at Columbia University spans the continuum from high school and pre-college students through lifelong learners with innovative offerings at the highest levels of academic excellence.
We recruit, develop, and support the expert staff that leads these efforts, and the world-class scholar-practitioners that serve as faculty for our master’s programs.
Part-Time Faculty
- Lecturers are the primary instructors for courses and an invaluable component of the faculty community at the School of Professional Studies (SPS).
- Associates support the course lecturer, assisting with course facilitation and instruction. Serving as an associate is an excellent opportunity to bolster teaching skills while building a relationship with Columbia University.
- SPS operates under a scholar‐practitioner faculty model, which enables students to learn both from research-focused full-time faculty and from executive and industry experts who are successful practitioners.
- Our scholar-practitioners are what make the curriculum offerings in each program cutting-edge and robust, with real-world examples and insights from experts in the field.
Pre-College Programs
- Instructors develop and deliver immersive non-credit courses for high-achieving high school students. They guide and supervise students when classes are in session and write a holistic evaluation of each course participant after classes conclude.
- Assistants help instructors with pedagogy (assisting students, in or outside of class) and also with logistics (organizing in-class activities, taking attendance, monitoring student conduct, etc.).
- Columbia’s Pre-College Programs have served high-achieving high school students from across the country and around the world for more than 30 years. Its diverse and international network of expert instructors foster a rich environment full of invaluable knowledge, skills, experience, and perspective.
Commitment to Faculty Development
- At the School of Professional Studies, we are committed to instructional excellence.
- We offer a range of programming and services dedicated to developing teaching effectiveness, including workshops, forums, and teaching consultations.
- We have also created the Pedagogical Lab: a 13-week, intensive professional development course in effective teaching. Trained faculty fellows conduct peer consultations and observations and lead open discussion forums on germane topics.
