- February is for Black History Month. Black History Month is a celebration of the achievements and acknowledgement of the history of Black people. Originating in the United States, it is now celebrated in Canada, the United Kingdom, and more.
In order to celebrate, we are curating profiles from members of the SPS community, so that the images and narratives of these individuals can be highlighted on the TV screens in Lewisohn Hall throughout Black History Month. - Yurij Pawluk, Chief of Staff at SPS for nearly three years, will be leaving Columbia to pursue opportunities in law and public policy. During his time at our School, Yurij has (among other things): worked to enhance our master’s degree offerings; spearheaded the launch of our access initiatives; and partnered with the Dean to oversee day-to-day operations during the time when the COO position was vacant. His last day in the CoS role will be May 27th. We are grateful for Yurij’s contributions to SPS and wish him well in his future endeavors.

- Laura Shin, ‘08JRN, recorded her podcast Unchained Live! on campus, with guest Vitalik Buterin, Co-Founder of Ethereum and Bitcoin Magazine. Topics discussed included the Enterprise Risk Management and Applied Analytics programs, as well as Professor of Professional Practice Sid Dalal’s Introduction to Blockchain, Cryto-currencies & Analytics course.
- On 3/6, the SPS Career Design Lab | New York hosted a private meeting and networking event with Dr. Will Roper, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (Acquisition, Technology, Logistics), and a champion of commercial technology. Dr. Roper oversees all Air Force research, development and acquisition activities, totaling an annual budget in excess of $40 billion for more than 465 acquisition programs. Richard Witten of Columbia Entrepreneurship, Senior Advisor to the President of Columbia University, and Orin Hershkowitz, SVP, CTV, joined, along with entrepreneurship leaders and MilVet students and alumni from SPS and across Columbia. Thomas Deely, SPS Executive Director for Corporate Partnerships, and Sim Segal, Academic Director of the M.S. in Enterprise Risk Management program, represented SPS. Curtis Rodgers, Vice Dean of General Studies made some brief remarks on the history of Columbia and the military during the networking event. The event was jointly sponsored by Columbia Entrepreneurship and Columbia Alumni Association.

- On 3/21, the Columbia SPS Career Design Lab | San Francisco kicked off a new quarterly event series, showcasing new methods and frameworks for practicing early-stage innovation. The series was formed as a collaboration between CDLSF, Columbia Venture Community, and Wildcat Ventures, to foster learning, networking, and increased interconnectivity. This inaugural evening featured a presentation and Q&A with Bruce Cleveland, Founding Partner of Wildcat Ventures, and author of Traversing the Traction Gap.
- The SPS Green Team will receive a platinum certification for Year 2 of Columbia's Sustainable Leaders Network Certification program. The School's practices of using sustainable products and methods, as reported in our yearly survey scoring, have led to the increased certification.

- ALP Senior Lecturers Frances Boyd and Carol Numrich, were active at the TESOL International Conference, held this year from March 12-15th in Atlanta, Georgia. Boyd spoke to a packed room on research-based practices for teaching vocabulary, while Boyd and Numrich together introduced the 5th edition of their prize-winning ESL academic textbook series, NorthStar, published by Pearson.

- The Sports Management program and Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid Universidad Europea announced their new partnership. Students are currently in Madrid for the week to study with faculty from Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid Universidad Europea and executives from Real Madrid C.F.
- The American Language Program, in collaboration with New York State Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Association, regularly hosts workshops that center on core issues related to teaching academic writing to English language learners in higher education. The workshops are organized by Lecturer Babi Kruchin and Adjunct Associate Tristan Thorne, also of Baruch's Tools for Clear Speech program. The next event, titled "Teaching Vocabulary to Enhance Academic Writing," will be held on 3/29 and will showcase the insights, strategies, and techniques of ESL educators from the American Language Program and other higher education institutions. Speakers include ALP faculty and members of the local ESL community.

- The Faculty Assessment and Development team is excited to announce the official launch of the SPS Faculty Mentoring Program, which is a voluntary program that is designed to increase the teaching effectiveness of faculty members and ensure a high-quality learning experience for all students at SPS. For the pilot of this program, five pairs of mentors and mentees have been carefully selected from the Business Certificate and the Applied Analytics programs. Mentors and mentees will engage in a variety of structured activities, including one-on-one meetings, development and training opportunities, and classroom observations, over the course of the semester. The launch of this program will meaningfully inform approaches to faculty mentoring at SPS as well as add to the literature on faculty mentoring at large. - AM New York recently interviewed Director of Community Relations George Calderaro, a preservationist and member of the 29th Street Neighborhood Association, upon the news that Tin Pan Alley could become a NYC landmark.
- Director of Postbaccalaureate Programs Gabriel Amor was named a finalist in The 2018 Gulf Coast Prize in Translation. Gulf Coast recognized Amor’s translation of Spanish-language poems, written by NYU Associate Professor Dr. Mariela Dreyfus.
- External Affairs welcomes Adam Siepiola, who joined the team this week as a Major Gifts Officer. Adam has had an extensive career in fundraising, most recently as Director of University Advancement at Adelphi University. Adam will be focused primarily on building scholarship funds through engagement with our alumni and other potential donors.

- Carolyn Brokowski, ’16SPS, Bioethics, recently co-authored “CRISPR Ethics: Moral Considerations for Applications of a Powerful Tool” and “Cutting Eugenics Out of CRISPR-Cas9.” Dean of Faculty at Harvard Medical School George Daley presented figures from Carolyn’s article, “Do CRISPR Germline Ethics Statements Cut It?,” at the Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing in Hong Kong, hosted by The Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong, The U.K. Royal Society, and the U.S. National Academies of Sciences and Medicine on 11/28.
- Claudia Lam, ’10SPS, Technology Management, is Mission Director at OneWeb, a global communications company. Claudia oversaw the successful liftoff of its first six satellites on 2/28. OneWeb investors include Virgin, Qualcomm, SoftBank, Coca-Cola, Salinas and Airbus, and the coalition's goal is to provide affordable broadband to the world through its global constellation of satellites.

- Moshmi Sanagavarapu, ’19SPS, Applied Analytics, has worked with Fortune 500 companies for over seven years and has built international experience in business and market analytics. She plans to pursue a career in advanced data science and strategy consulting.
- LaNola Stone, '20SPS, Strategic Communication, worked in public affairs for the Coast Guard, exhibited her photography at Art Basel, and earned a master's at the School of Visual Arts before coming to SPS. Her goal is to integrate her diverse resume to position herself in corporate communications.
- Dr. Seth Waldman, ’19SPS, Bioethics, is a practicing anesthesiologist, serves as Director of the Division of Pain Management at Hospital for Special Surgery, is the Medical Advisor for Opioid Practices at the hospital, and was one of the founders of the Tri-Institutional Pain Management Fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical College.

- Dr. Steven Cohen, Sustainability Management Academic Director and SPS Senior Vice Dean, recently authored a post entitled "Youth Strike for Climate and the Ethics of Climate Policy" on the Earth Institute State of the Planet blog.
- Dr. Beth Fisher-Yoshida, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Academic Director and Vice Chair of the Faculty, has been working in Medellín, Colombia with youth and community leaders for more than 4 years with colleagues from the Youth, Peace and Security project at The Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict and Complexity (AC4) at the Earth Institute. The group ran an interactive workshop on thinking systemically using Dynamical Systems Theory with members of the Social Lab in an area called Castilla. The workshop helped participants understand the relationships between factors in their environment and identify potential unintended consequences of interventions.
- Ethan McCarty, who teaches "Digital Media and Analytics" class in the Strategic Communication program, recently wrote a whitepaper in partnership with Poppulo, "Where Employee Engagement Fails: Ineffective Internal Communications."
- Sports Management lecturer Ray Katz discussed the cost structures of athletics departments and colleges' investment in sports with John Wall Street. Read the article here.
- Longtime Information and Knowledge Strategy lecturer Jeanne Harris, who teaches Business Analytics Management, recently had her article published in the Information Systems Journal, "Innovation at Work: The Relative Advantage of Using Consumer IT in the Workplace."
- Guy St. Clair, who teaches "Managing Information and Knowledge: Applied Knowledge Services" in the Information and Knowledge Strategy program, has been appointed Series Editor in the new “Knowledge Services” series published by Verlag Walter De Gruyter GmbH, Berlin. Barrie Levy, ’15SPS, IKNS, who is the course associate for "Managing Information and Knowledge," will serve on the series’ Editorial Board. Guy and Barrie will author the first book, The Knowledge Services Handbook: A Guide for the Knowledge Strategist, which will be published in November.
- Director of the SPS Postbaccalaureate Programs Gabriel Amor is producing multimedia readings for his award-winning manuscript for the translation of Juana I in collaboration with the author of the original version, Ana Arzoumanian, and musician/songwriter Marta Hernandez. The Poetry Foundation will host the next reading/performance on 3/21. More information can be found here.
- Sustainability Management faculty member Lynnette Widder designed and installed “Kaneji Domoto: Visions of Usonia” at the Maass Gallery at the College of Art and Design at State University of New York Purchase College. The installation addresses the work of the mid-century Japanese American architect in Pleasantville, NY, in the only housing community designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The show will run until 3/13.
- Christoph Meinrenken, who teaches "Theory and Practice of Lifecycle Assessment" in the Sustainability Management program, has created the Carbon Catalogue, a data-visualization tool that shows the carbon footprints of hundreds of consumer products. In addition to his role as an associate research scientist at The Earth Institute, he serves as the chief data scientist at CoClear, an environmental analytics firm. - Dr. Marco Tedesco, who teaches "Quantifying the Financial Impacts of Climate Change" in the Sustainability Science program, was recently quoted in an article in The Washington Post, "A surprising new picture of ocean circulation could have major consequences for climate science."
- Dr. Einat Lev, who teaches "Sustainability in the Face of Natural Disasters" in the Sustainability Science program, was interviewed on Science Friday for a segment on "The Geologists Who Control Lava."

- SPS made headlines at Super Bowl LIII! Sports Management faculty, including Academic Director Scott Rosner, Neal Pilson, Michael Neuman, and Joe Favorito analyzed the sports business aspects of the game for various press outlets. Dean Wingard interviewed NFL EVP of Operations and SPS Board of Overseers Member Troy Vincent for the latest edition of Talks@Columbia. Nicole Thorne, '20SPS, Strategic Communication, winner of the PepsiCo Game Changers Competition, rang the Nasdaq bell in celebration of the Pepsi Halftime Show.
- The Summer Immersion Programs for High School Students are adding over twenty new classes this summer, in subjects as diverse as blockchain, human rights, television production, special relativity, novel-writing, data journalism, American studies, and investment portfolio management. Every summer the 3-Week and 1-Week Immersion Programs host over 2,500 high-achieving high school students from all over the world. Each student focuses intensively on one field of study while also exploring New York City, making new friends, getting a taste of college life, and enjoying scores of co-curricular activities.
- The Information and Knowledge Strategy program hosted U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald J. Hedges (ret.) as a guest speaker in Law for Knowledge Innovation and Practices on 3/5. Ron joined IKNS faculty member Gail Gottehrer to talk about Employment Law, and how knowledge strategists can add value to their organizations by understanding the kinds of information that can, and cannot, be considered by employers in decisions about recruiting, hiring, promotion, discipline, and termination. Ron served as a Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey from 1986 to 2007, and is currently Senior Counsel at Dentons in NYC.
- The Sustainability Management program is launching a new summer 2019 course, Sustainability and Urban Form: Redevelopment, Reuse, and Ecological Design, taught by Allison Bridges, Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the Earth Institute. This course explores the life of urban redevelopment and adaptive reuse projects by exploring the various motivations for urban renewal, the stakeholders in the implementation process, and the impact on the social fabric of the city.
- The Sustainability Science Special Topics seminar series hosted Dr. Tim Creyts, Associate Research Professor, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory on 2/26, for “How the Ice Sheets are Contributing to Sea Level."
ADMINISTRATION NEWS
- Dr. Brian Dashew, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and an SPS staff member since July 2011, has accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at Rutgers University Graduate School of Education. Brian has been a great colleague and respected leader at SPS. Among his many achievements, he has developed and designed new programs and curricula, as well as built the infrastructure for our online programs. Brian has also provided invaluable support to our 15 M.S. programs, collaborating with Academic Directors to ensure that the students of SPS receive a world-class education. Brian's last day will be Friday, April 19. We congratulate Brian and wish him much continued success in his new role at Rutgers.
- SPS was awarded a Workplace Sustainability Certification by the Columbia University Office of Environmental Stewardship and the Columbia Sustainable Leaders Network. Like the U.S. Green Building Council LEED accreditation system, the award ranges from Bronze to Platinum, and SPS received Silver. SPS was one of five schools at Columbia to receive an award. To kick off Phase Two of the SPS Sustainability Plan, staff who regularly order from restaurants to cater meetings and events at Lewisohn offices are asked to request that the restaurant not deliver food in Styrofoam or deliver plastic utensils. Staff are also asked to bring in a mug or non-disposable container from home to use for coffee, tea, water or any other beverage they may consume in SPS offices.
- The Advising team welcomed our auditing community to campus on 1/14 for an Auditor Registration Rundown. Our advisors led participants through the registration process and the group shared favorite past and upcoming courses.
- Adrienne Garber, Associate Director of Instructional Design, obtained a Certification in Administration of Sponsored Projects. This credential is overseen by the Columbia University's Office of Research Compliance and Training and provides a foundation of knowledge about the federal regulations and University policies and procedures that govern research and compliance at Columbia.
- Three members of SPS’ advising team--Tom Schrank, Thomas Kiefer and Sabina Sackett--attended NACADA’s 16th annual Assessment Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1/31-2/2. This working institute was an intensive two and a half days focused on the components of a successful assessment program, as well as specific strategies and tools for developing and implementing an action plan for our advising team.
- Advisors Sarah Malasaga and Mydashia Hough attended NACADA’s 17th annual Administrators’ Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 2/7-2/9. This two-day intensive was intended to help our team create an action plan that focused on key issues or concerns in order to make significant changes and improvements to our advising program.
- On 2/18, the Office of Advising hosted an HBCU Registration Rundown event for HBCU Fellows. The team shared important information and dates and hosted personalized advising breakout sessions.
- More than 25 alumni from a wide mix of Columbia Schools conducted interviews on 2/2 in the SPS Career Design Lab | San Francisco as part of the Alumni Representative Committee (ARC). Over 75 high school seniors and their parents attended.
- The Business Services team announced a new online submission process for IT, Systems and Facilities requests. Requests for hardware, software, A/V, furniture and moving tasks can now be submitted by creating a ticket on the Zendesk site: spsservice.zendesk.com.

- Two Strategic Communication alumni are speaking at SXSW 2019. Kai D. Wright, '09SPS, Strategic Communication, who is also a faculty member in the program, spoke at the session "Follow the Feeling: Creating Brand Value" on 3/10. Shari Stiell-Quashie, '19SPS, Strategic Communication, will speak at "Nuance is the New Audience" on 3/14 .
- The Practicum in Innovative Sustainability Leadership course in the Sustainability Management program recently featured Sophia Mendelsohn, ’16SPS, Sustainability Management. Sophia discussed her role as the Head of Sustainability for JetBlue.

PORTLAND AND SEATTLE | Members of the SPS Advising team will also be in Seattle, WA on 3/12 and Portland, OR on 3/14 to host Master’s Nights, an opportunity for prospective students to enjoy light bites and drinks, mingle, and meet program representatives.
STARTUP GRIND | For the first time a group from SPS exhibited at Startup Grind, one of the preeminent global gatherings for entrepreneurs and investors. The San Francisco Career Design Lab team staffed a booth, sharing information about our M.S. offerings in Technology Management, Applied Analytics, Bioethics, and Strategic Communication. SPS had even greater exposure from the Main Stage, where Faculty Director J.D. Schramm conducted a fireside chat with noted author, investor, entrepreneur, and Columbia Business School faculty member Steve Blank. The two discussed Blank's recent work on "How to keep your job as your company grows" with an audience of more than 1,000 people.
