Why High Test Scores Aren’t Enough: Chinese Educators Wonder
Frances Boyd, ALP Senior Lecturer, recently gave a webinar to curious English Language educators in Shanghai. The question: why aren’t high TOEFL and IELTS scores enough for study at schools like Columbia?
She addressed the question head on: because standardized tests don’t effectively measure the cognitive skills or inquiring attitudes of the critical thinker. As President Lee Bollinger puts it, “An undergraduate education… requires moving outside your own little way of seeing the world.” This is why critical thinking, as well as sophisticated and accurate speaking and writing, are central to the curriculum at the American Language Program.
