The Nonprofit Management master’s program equips professionals to excel in nonprofit management careers, whether in international or community nonprofits, foundations, institutions of higher education, healthcare, or the arts, or as fundraising and development experts who work throughout the sector.

For students and professionals who wish to work with mission-based organizations providing some of the most fundamental and important services to our communities, Columbia’s M.S. in Nonprofit Management will prepare you for leadership roles.

With over $900 billion flowing through the nonprofit sector in one recent year alone, comprising 5.4% of the United States GDP and employing 10% of U.S. non-government employment, the nonprofit sector has emerged as a powerful economic engine. The growth of the nonprofit sector requires new policy considerations and sophisticated advocacy strategies. Nonprofit professionals now must be conversant with and utilize new technologies, digital media and data analytics to further their organization’s mission. International perspectives are more important to this sector than ever, with private/public partnerships being deployed to help solve some of the most intractable problems across the globe.

The increasingly sophisticated nonprofit sector now demands its professionals to have management skills tailored to the unique needs of this mission-based sector. The M.S. in Nonprofit Management at Columbia is your portal to mastering cutting-edge applications of management skills to this particular sector, as well as exploring current issues in policy, law, digital strategies, and risk management.

Study Options On-Campus in New York City and Online

In addition to the current full-time and part-time on-campus options, a fully online option will be available to students on a part-time basis starting in fall 2019. Students are required to take 6 credits per term in sequence, including the summer terms. These classes will hold weekly required live webinar sessions. Beginning in fall 2020, the online program will be available on both a full-time and part-time basis.

The online program uses a highly collaborative and interactive social learning platform to connect with instructors and fellow students, including weekly live online sessions to enable interaction between faculty and students and immersion in course content, student discussion groups, collaborative and independent coursework, interactive forums, and access to prerecorded videos.

The program’s content and learning outcomes are identical in both the on-campus and online options; both the on-campus and online program have access to rigorous coursework, live world-class instruction by Columbia faculty, career and professional development, and personal feedback on assignments.

On-campus students are also eligible to take online courses, which provide another dimension of scheduling flexibility; international students on a student visa are restricted to one online class each semester.

Switching between on-campus and online is possible. If you enroll in the online format, you can switch to the on-campus format after your first semester with administrative approval.

Note: International students who are interested in switching from online to on campus should consult with us about visa and other requirements as soon as possible in their decision making process. They will also need to consult with ISSO for detailed information related to visa requirements and CPT (Curriculum Practical Training) eligibility.

In addition to instruction by the program’s faculty, the program regularly hosts high-profile industry executives as guest lecturers.
