History and Mission
The American Language Program, begun in 1911, is one of the oldest English language programs in the United States.
The ALP aims to:
- provide high-quality academic English courses for full-time language students and international students in degree programs at Columbia University
- help students become familiar with U.S. culture
- prepare students for studying in a U.S. academic context
- promote the internationalization of Columbia
The ALP mission is to provide rigorous English language education that supports the academic, professional and personal goals of our student community, while promoting critical thinking and intercultural awareness.
