Political Analytics, Media, and Election Decision Desks: A Conversation with Michael Miller, Barnard College Professor and Fox News Decision Desk Analyst

Michael Miller, associate professor of political science at Barnard College, is an author, data scientist, and analyst on the Fox News decision desk. In his work for the decision desk, Miller employs models to analyze incoming data to provide viewers with projections of winners and losers on election night.

In an interview with Political Analytics Program Director Gregory Wawro, Miller discusses the role of a decision desk on election night, the skills necessary to work in a high-pressure environment, and how an M.S. in Political Analytics can prepare students for political analytics in media professions.

“There’s a wide swath of things in media and journalism that analytics will help with,” said Miller. “Holistically, everything going on with the curriculum here would be immediately helpful for anybody who wants to do political journalism or any other kind of data-driven journalistic career.”

About the Program

The M.S. in Political Analytics program is designed to fill an important role in the rapidly developing field of data analytics as it is applied to politics and public policy, allowing students who are interested in new approaches to data analytics—such as machine learning—to integrate those interests with a politics or policy focus. Furthermore, it will provide a clearer professional trajectory by helping students acquire necessary skills and suitable employment after graduation.

The final application deadline is June 15, 2023. The 36-credit program is available part-time and full-time. Apply now
