Human Capital Management Lecturer Dr. Amelia F. Zwecher Shares Industry Insights with Incoming Students

Dr. Amelia F. Zwecher is a certified human resources senior-level executive for Legal Services NYC, a nonprofit social justice law firm. Prior to this, she held a senior-level role as a talent acquisition, retention, and employee engagement director for a nonprofit charitable organization. Dr. Zwecher has been an adjunct professor for more than nine years at numerous institutions, and currently teaches in the Human Capital Management M.S. program. Dr. Zwecher describes what drew her to a career in human capital management, and what incoming students should be aware of as they navigate their master's program, in the following Q&A.

What drew you to a career in human capital management?

A mentor of mine gave me insight into the field on numerous occasions. My mind was blown learning how many interesting areas existed in HR. I immediately identified a connection between my work and education. I love teaching adults about numerous topics in HR at an array of institutions.

What aspect of your journey has allowed you to succeed in this industry?

My desire to obtain education and certification in the field allowed me to strategically align myself in two industries (higher education & nonprofit law firm). It’s also essential for you to surround yourself with positive influences.

What industry trends should students entering this field be aware of?

Attracting and retaining talent has never been more challenging than in 2022. In the face of a mass exodus from the labor market, students need to be prepared for challenging conditions in the HR realm that will require innovation and dedication. It appears that today’s talent is even more impatient, actively searching for deeper fulfillment and flexibility.

I would advise students to enjoy the learning process and everything that HR has to offer. I recommend students to gain a generalist foundation before focusing on a target area in the profession. I believe it will make the individual more marketable in a volatile environment.

What advice would you offer to an incoming Human Capital Management student?

I would advice students to enjoy the learning process and everything that HR has to offer. I recommend students to gain a generalist foundation before focusing on a target area in the profession. I believe it will make the individual more marketable in a volatile environment.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Legal Services NYC?

I enjoy working with my supervisor the most. She truly is a valued leader and a visionary who treats her direct reports with respect. My supervisor empowers me to succeed even under the most trying circumstances.

Is there one misconception about working in the human resources/HCM field you'd like to dispel?

“HR professionals exist solely to protect the company.” Therefore, employees who think that way are often difficult and hostile with the professional.
