Anthony Calleo, HR Leader at Disney, ABC, and Dime Community Bank, Joins Human Capital Management Program

Anthony Calleo joined the Human Capital Management program this semester. As a Faculty Teaching Associate, he supports instruction of students enrolled in the Finance for Effective Human Capital Management course. Calleo has held various leadership positions in an HR capacity at organizations like Disney ABC Television Company, The Walt Disney Company, and most recently Dime Community Bank. Calloeo shares insights into carving a path in the human capital management industry in the following Q&A.

What drew you to a career in human capital management?

My love for people. I am passionate about developing cultures that allow employees to grow professionally and personally.

What aspect of your journey has allowed you to succeed in this industry?

I have always believed in taking a consultive approach to my work. That starts with building trust with the people I support, followed by understanding the work they do and how it fits into the company's business. It's also vital to always know the ground truth. What are your employees really thinking and feeling?

What industry trends should students entering this field be aware of?

Employee Experience (EX) is everything. EX was always important, but it is especially true now. Employee Experience is critical in today's environment, where so many aspects of the workplace have been disrupted.

Keep the "human" element at the forefront of your studies because that's what it's all about.

What advice would you offer to an incoming Human Capital Management student?

Columbia's Human Capital Management program is well-rounded and taught by industry leaders who bring their real-world experience into every session. My advice; keep the "human" element at the forefront of your studies because that's what it's all about.

Is there one misconception about working in the human resources field you'd like to dispel?

I believe that HR is stilled feared by some. While leaders of organizations realize that we are vital to helping drive the business, not every employee through out the organization feels that way. To be fair, some leaders don't either.
