Leveraging Global Lessons to Advance Local Repair: Reparations, Truth, Healing & Reconciliation in NYC

In the coming years, the NYC Commission on Racial Equity (CORE) and its partners will lead a study on Reparations and a public truth, healing, and reconciliation process to cast light on the long-standing impact of chattel slavery and Jim Crow in New York City. Columbia University’s Negotiation and Conflict Resolution (NECR) program and Center for Justice are excited to host a panel featuring Chair and Executive Director of the NYC Commission on Racial Equity ( NYC CORE) Linda Tigani, Emmy Award winner Tyrik Washington, international human rights expert Eduardo González, and NECR program director Dr. Peter Dixon, moderated by NYC chief equity officer and commissioner for the Mayor’s Office of Equity and Racial Justice Sideya Sherman.  Under Local City Laws 91 and 92, NYC CORE and its partners will be working with New Yorkers to build a credible, community-led road map for Reparations, truth, and healing in NYC. This panel will feature discussion on why these matter at the city scale; how legitimacy, participation, and community consultation will be integrated; and where state, national, and global experiences are informing the work.
