Language Exchange Program
The ALP runs the Language Exchange Program (LEP). which helps students find a language partner to practice with.
An ALP student learning English is paired with an English-speaking Columbia student* who is learning the first language of the ALP student. The two then meet and spend time speaking their two languages. For example, an ALP student who is fluent in Spanish is paired with a Columbia student who is fluent in English, but wants to practice Spanish. Both partners then help and learn from one another. Partners have the independence to design their meetings according to their needs and to meet whenever it is convenient.
To apply for a language partner, complete the online application form. Students requesting any language are encouraged to apply. However, the most common requests are for partners who speak Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Once you have submitted your application, you will be contacted when a partner that meets your needs is found. Some applicants of less common languages may be placed on a waitlist if a partner in that language cannot immediately be found. Students will be matched on a first come, first served basis.
*The ALP is only able to match current Columbia students.
Note: This program is not offered during the summer.
Participating in LEP was one of the best decisions I've made at Columbia."
