Advising

The American Language Program can help with academic, personal and immigration advising.

Academic Advising

The ALP provides enrolled students with academic counseling and advice about matters relating to their lives as students in the School and at the University. Your teachers can provide advice and feedback about your general abilities in English, but if you would like more advice about your English learning or your classes, or would like to know more about applying to university in the U.S. email alp-advising [[at]] columbia [[dot]] edu (alp-advising[at]columbia[dot]edu) to schedule an appointment with the Assistant Director for Student Life.

Personal or General Advising

Moving to a different country, or to a big city like New York, is a completely new experience for a lot of people. Many things may be strange or confusing. We’re here to help! The Assistant Director for Student Life can provide help and guidance to many types of questions. She may also provide students with referrals to other offices, both on and off campus, as necessary.

We encourage current students to meet with the Assistant Director for Student Life in 504 Lewisohn Hall. Our goal is to ensure your experience in the ALP will be as rewarding as possible. Email alp-advising [[at]] columbia [[dot]] edu (alp-advising[at]columbia[dot]edu) to schedule an appointment.

Immigration Advising

If you are studying on an F-1 visa, maintaining your status is very important. The Office of Immigration Advising provides immigration services for new and returning ALP students. It can help with requests for student visas and with questions about maintaining your status. It can also help with questions about travel abroad, extension of study, transfers and immigration obligations while you are a student at Columbia’s ALP. Email the Assistant Director for Compliance at alpvisa [[at]] columbia [[dot]] edu (alpvisa[at]columbia[dot]edu) or call 212-854-3586.
