Michael Atkin Takes the Lead in Teaching Data Management Skills

While it’s an industry maxim that “data management can’t be taught,” Michael Atkin is proving them wrong with a new elective course in Columbia University’s Applied Analytics program.

This School of Professional Studies course in data content management is the “first of its kind,” Atkin said in a new profile at Waters Technology.

Working with Atkins and Goldman Sachs alumnus Tim Bishop, students develop data management case studies in industries including finance. Atkin sees this program as something that can launch a career:

Data management is the fastest-growing area, and there is no curriculum — everyone has to learn by doing. We don’t get… innovative, young, smart, energetic kids [coming out of college] thinking about our problem of data management. But now we are: Thanks to Columbia’s insight, we’ve got a foothold.
