Lecturer Patti Ippoliti Discusses Unconscious Bias in Mentoring Relationships at Yale University

Lecturer for the Columbia University M.S. in Enterprise Risk Management Program, Dr. Patti Ippoliti, was a featured speaker at the 2022 Equity in the Job Search (EJS) Symposium at Yale University. The Symposium consisted of presentations and practical workshops to assist graduate students, postdoctoral scholars at all stages of the STEM job search, and past graduate business students working across several industries. Dr. Ippoliti's presentation was titled "Unconscious Bias and Its Influence in Mentoring Relationships."

As an accomplished business executive, senior consultant, coach, and professor, Dr. Ippoliti shared her "secrets" to building successful mentoring relationships. One of them is building those relationships based on mutual trust and respect. To achieve that, Dr. Ippoliti discussed the need to acknowledge unconscious biases and stereotypes that impact mentoring relationships and provided an overview of how unconscious biases can show up in our professional lives. She also provided strategies for addressing stereotypes and challenging those biases. Dr. Ippoliti concluded her presentation with lively questions and answers from the participants.

As a thought leader and "builder of leadership talent," Dr. Ippoliti educates, coaches, and mentors graduate business students, professionals, and executives. She defines a mentor as someone who teaches, inspires, motivates, and empowers another person. As a featured speaker at the EJS Symposium, Dr. Ippoliti was named one of Yale's 2022 Recognized Mentors. "I have learned that the best mentors are those who see more talent and potential in you than you see in yourself, and who can help you develop that potential so you can become the 'best version of you," Dr. Ippoliti shared in a LinkedIn post.
