Katrina Pugh: How Social Media Creates New Valuable Assets

In the 2016 White Paper for the International Legal Technology AssociationKatrina Pugh, the program director of the Information and Knowledge Strategy graduate program at Columbia's School of Professional Studies, is quoted extensively in the article titled, "What Can Legal KM [Knowledge Mangement] Learn From Other Professional Serivces Organizations?" Pugh discusses “ugly assets,” which are the quick soundbites created by organizations on social media and other similar platforms, such as question and answer threads on Twitter. These assets often “lack an introduction, provide little analysis and have ambiguous context,” and could be leading to a decline in knowledge codification.

Yet even though these "ugly assets" may seem to lack value on the surface, Pugh, argues that these assets are beneficial, because they are part of an evolution in knowledge exchange that is leading to an increase in conversation and collaboration. Squelching this new process could impact an organization’s ability to quickly adapt to change.
