Instructional Design Team Presents at Online Learning Consortium's Spring 2022 Conference

Columbia’s Instructional Design team, composed of Associate Director of Learning Resources and Academic Technology Domi Enders and Instructional Designers Camilo Irizarry and Cassandra Scannella, presented on the development of effective strategies to support collaboration and reflective practice. 

The presentation focused on Problem-Based Learning, a pedagogical framework. As opposed to traditional learning, Problem-Based Learning assigns students to a problem. Students then must identify and learn the needed information in order to solve the problem. The presentation also highlighted strategies that enable student engagement, such as reflective rubrics, which have aided in student awareness about collaboration and their experience in various group-based Problem-Based Learning projects. 

Three topics were explored: 

  • How Columbia plans to design Problem-Based Learning in an asynchronous Master’s program
  • How to address the challenges of asynchronous group work, collaboration, and reflective practice
  • How to leverage student data insights to facilitate iterative teaching practice, instructional design, and educational technology implementation.
