Hardi Vadher, a student in Columbia’s Master of Science in Strategic Communication program and the School of Professional Studies Student Government (SPSSG) secretary, never imagined that she would be where she is today. “Sometimes it’s hard to believe that I’m not only at this great University, I’ve been chosen to represent my School community,” said Vadher. “It’s a fantastic opportunity, and I’m so thrilled to be here.”
Vadher graduated with a double major in psychology and business management and organizational studies from the University of Western Ontario, where she made the Dean’s Honour List multiple times and received the Western Scholarship of Excellence. She then earned her master’s in industrial relations and human resources from the University of Toronto. While there, she was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship and Ontario Graduate Scholarship, among others.
Additionally, Vadher has a wide range of professional experience, working as a technology-people experience consultant at BDO, a marketing intern at Dell, and a researcher in Western University’s Consumer Behaviour Lab. “Each experience, from internships to awards, has fueled my passion for storytelling and making a difference through communication,” she said.
Despite her successes, Vadher’s journey has not been entirely linear. Even though she had little construction experience, she volunteered and helped in the construction of the BAPS Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey, the second-largest Hindu temple in the world. “This experience taught me an invaluable lesson that I carry with me today even as I continue completing my degree at Columbia,” she said. “Everything you do—small or big—mundane or novel—has a purpose and contributes to making you uniquely, authentically you.”
Vadher has been involved in student government since sixth grade. Since then, she has served as Student Government president for two years at the University of Toronto, SPSSG at-large representative in fall 2023, and the PR chair in spring 2024. Her role as secretary is a little bit more behind-the-scenes, but her motivations have remained consistent: “I want to create a space where students feel heard, supported, and valued.”
Vadher describes herself as a proud Torontonian. “You’ll probably catch me saying ‘eh’ every now and then,” she said. Outside of her roles as a student and SPSSG secretary, Vadher spends her time sampling new foods, engaging in volunteer work, trying new dance styles, and searching for adventurous activities around the globe. She has even been skydiving in Australia.
“Each experience, from Columbia to the construction of BAPS Akshardham, has deepened my belief that communication is about building bridges, inspiring action, and leaving a lasting impact.”
