Why did you choose the Master of Professional Studies in Wealth Management at the Columbia School of Professional Studies?
I chose the MPS in Wealth Management at Columbia for several reasons. Firstly, I’ve always wanted to deepen my knowledge in the dynamic and multidisciplinary field of wealth management, adding to that, the industry is rapidly changing and I felt the need to keep up with it. I have long been searching for programs and courses focused on this subject, and Columbia’s was by far the most complete I have found.
Having worked in the industry both in the US and in Brazil, I've long recognized the need for a formal education to navigate these shifts, and to be prepared to serve more complex clients demands. Moreover, Columbia's program stands out as the only Ivy League offering a specific program in wealth management, where the faculty is composed of experienced and successful professionals in the field, affirming its commitment to excellence in this domain.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to prospective students?
One important piece of advice for prospective students is to embrace the demanding nature of the curriculum. The program requires a lot of effort, hard work and long study hours. However, every text, lesson, assignment, office hour and group project hold immense and applicable value for those aspiring to excel in the field of wealth management. The program's depth of knowledge and practical insights are invaluable assets for both industry veterans and aspiring professionals looking to enter it. From an international student perspective, that do not work in the US industry, I can tell from experience that I could apply basically everything I’ve learned into my practice, and subjects not directly applicable to my country gave me perspective and knowledge to enrich discussions with clients that aspire to live in the US, or already have relatives in the country, which is becoming common for HNWI and UHWNI that tend to have an increasingly international family structure and dynamic.
What are the benefits of this asynchronous program from a learning and networking perspective?
The asynchronous nature of this program offers many advantages from both a learning and networking perspective. Firstly, it enables students to continue working while immersing themselves in the coursework. This practical application of knowledge in real-time is immensely valuable. Networking opportunities happen through office hours, group projects, and informal "virtual coffees" with fellow cohort members, alumni and with the faculty. These interactions foster meaningful connections and a collaborative learning environment, enhancing the overall educational experience.
How did your career change during and/or after earning an M.P.S. in Wealth Management?
Earning my M.P.S. in Wealth Management was transformative. The knowledge gained was immediately applicable, enabling me to serve more complex and sophisticated clients effectively. I now possess a broader perspective of the entire industry, valuable resources to go to when necessary, a rich network of fellow cohort members, alumni and faculty. Along with it, the formal degree from Columbia serves as a significant distinguishing factor when engaging with clients. The program's impact on my career has been profound, equipping me with the skills and confidence to excel in this dynamic field. As an alumni I am also invited to various events from the Wealth Management program, and events of the Columbia alumni community in my country.
