What’s one piece of advice you’d give to prospective students?
Before applying, have an open conversation with your family and loved ones. When I decided to pursue this program, my wife and I held a family meeting with our children to discuss what it would mean for all of us: less personal time together, missed events, and added responsibilities for my wife over the next 16 months. As Walt Disney once said, “A man should never neglect his family for business.” Their support made all the difference. This program is demanding, and without the full backing of your family, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Make sure they understand and support your goals, because success here isn’t just about earning a degree, it’s about becoming a better financial planner and person for those you serve.
What are the benefits of this asynchronous program from a learning and networking perspective?
From a learning standpoint, the flexibility of the asynchronous format is invaluable for working professionals. I manage a 50-hour workweek while raising three children, so being able to access lectures and materials on my own schedule was essential. What surprised me most, however, was the depth of networking this format enables. I’ve connected with professionals from across the country, and even internationally, which has expanded my professional network far beyond what I imagined. The diversity of perspectives among classmates truly enriches the learning experience.
How did your career change during and/or after earning an M.P.S. in Wealth Management?
Before entering the program, I was preparing to transition from the brokerage industry into the RIA space, seeking an environment that better aligned with my values. Midway through the program, I was offered a position at a boutique RIA whose founder recognized the value of continuing education, particularly from an Ivy League institution like Columbia. After graduating, I passed the CFP® exam and now feel far more equipped to serve clients across the high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth spectrum. This program has been rewarding, and without it, I wouldn’t be in the professional position I am today.
Why did you choose the Master of Professional Studies in Wealth Management at the Columbia School of Professional Studies?
At a turning point in my career, I wanted to deepen my expertise and sharpen my skills as a financial planner. I researched every online wealth management graduate program available. Living and practicing in rural Texas, I recognized that a degree from a local university would carry strong regional recognition, but what mattered most to me was learning from nationally recognized practitioners and educators who actively serve clients, not just teach theory. Columbia’s program offered exactly that blend of academic rigor and real-world insight, making it the clear choice.
