Message from the Chief Engagement Officer
At the Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS), engagement is not an abstract ideal—it is operationalized through the structures, programs, and daily practices that shape how our community participates in the life of the School.
Grounded in the broader mission of Columbia University, engagement affirms that every member of our community deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and have meaningful opportunities to contribute to teaching, learning, research, and service. Engagement at SPS is intentionally designed to ensure that individuals understand their roles, have equitable access to opportunity, and can contribute in ways that advance both their professional goals and the School’s mission.
We see engagement in action through formal avenues for voice and representation, including the SPS Student Government, where students partner with faculty and administrators to advocate for their peers and shape programming and policy. It is reflected in cross-constituency committees and leadership councils that invite faculty, staff, and students to inform decision-making and strengthen institutional practices. These are not symbolic bodies—they are structured governance mechanisms through which community insight informs decisions, strengthens accountability, and improves institutional outcomes.
Engagement is also embedded in environments designed to enable access, resilience, and for professional advancement. The Office of Disability Services and the SPS CARE Team ensure that students have equitable access to learning and well-being resources. Student Life programming and recognized student organizations create the context for connection across programs and professions. Fellowships that expand access to education—part of the broader engagement initiatives detailed in this section—along with mentoring and career programming through the Career Design Lab, provide tangible pathways for individuals to develop, contribute, and lead.
For faculty, initiatives such as the Faculty Fellows Program and the Pedagogical Lab create structured opportunities for collaboration, learning innovation, and shared professional experiences. The School’s Inclusive Teaching and Learning Policy outlines expectations for respect and equitable participation in classrooms, ensuring that all students have a defined pathway to contribute and succeed. In partnership with the SPS Office of Instructional Support, faculty are supported and held to clear expectations for designing and delivering learning environments that promote participation, transparency, and academic rigor. Together, these efforts strengthen instructional quality and reinforce engagement as a shared responsibility for students' success.

Taken together, these programs, cross-school partnerships, and institutional collaborations illustrate what engagement means at SPS: clear expectations, open and structured channels for dialogue, transparent access to opportunity, and sustained investment in people. Engagement is how we ensure that individuals are not merely present, but empowered—seen and heard in ways that advance both personal achievement and institutional excellence.
