M. Anne Cunney, M.S.
Lecturer, Narrative Medicine
After a twenty-year career as a market researcher of patient and physician healthcare communications, Anne completed Columbia’s Master’s degree (2015) in Narrative Medicine leading her to explore the role of “home” on issues of self-identity and belonging articulated in her published essay Home is Where Your Story Lives (2014). This led to the design and fielding of a workshop series called Stories of Origin; findings presented at the 2015 Health and Humanities Conference.
She is continuing this work through writing a memoir of her own origin experiences. Post graduation Anne worked as the principal investigator in a short-term study on the benefits of Narrative Medicine improvement of staff inter-relations, retention, and patient care at Isabella Care in the Bronx. The following year Anne was a direct care professional in a home for developmentally disabled adults.
In Spring 2017 she was a Narrative Medicine facilitator for residents at Sophie Davis College for Biomedical Education in NYC. Also, that year she became director of youth education for the Ethical Society of Northern Westchester (ESNW) developing a Narrative Medicine-based ethics curriculum for 5 to 12 year olds. At the ESNW she has also been called on to introduce adult members to Narrative Medicine through platform presentations and workshops.
For the last 5 years starting in 2018 Anne became a lecturer for the on-line Narrative Medicine Certificate Program instructing students in Pedagogy: Goals, Methods Contexts coursework. In this position she has also participated in and co-facilitated the in-person Certificate Program annual weekend workshops.
Anne is a regular participant in the monthly Narrative Medicine Educators meetings, as well as a facilitator for Narrative Medicine Virtual Workshops, launched to provide healthcare professional support during the pandemic; sessions are held via zoom for global participation. Most recently Anne facilitated Narrative Medicine seminars at Lawrence NYP Hospital for the Cancer Treatment Center staff, which has included a qualitative research analysis. The final data is being prepared for publication.
