Applications for 2024 Columbia Summer Session programs are now open!

Close alert

Columbia University's School of Professional Studies, The Earth Institute, and The Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict, and Complexity are pleased to invite you to the launch of Dr. Peter T. Coleman's latest book, The Way Out: How to Overcome Toxic Polarization. Author and professor Dr. Peter T. Coleman will discuss his decades-long research on toxic polarization, how and why we are so stuck currently, and what we can each do to ‘unstick’ ourselves and our communities. He will be joined in conversation by Dr. John Paul Lederach, Professor Emeritus of International Peacebuilding at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at Notre Dame University.

About The Way Out: How to Overcome Toxic Polarization:

We are as divided as ever. Where do we go from here?

The way out of our current state of political polarization can be hard to see unless you know where to look.

This book will show you. It offers new insights from current research on how seemingly unchangeable problems can and do, in fact, change. It will suggest what you can do – the actions, skills and competencies that will help you navigate these times most effectively – as well as what to look for in groups and organizations in your community that are already at work making America more functional again.

"A treasure trove of insight and instruction, this is the best scientific and practical guide I have read about toxic polarization."

— John Paul Lederach, author of The Moral Imagination: The Art and Soul of Building Peace

"Essential reading for the divisive 2020s...this book really does show us 'The Way Out.'"

— Jonathan Haidt, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Righteous Mind
