Rita Charon Reflects on a Life of Narrative Medicine

In the Fall 2018 issue of Humanities, the magazine of the National Endowment for the Humanities, NEH Chairman Jon Parrish interviews Dr. Rita Charon, who will deliver the 2018 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities in Washington, D.C. on October 15.

In the wide-ranging interview, Dr. Charon reflects on her childhood, how a discarded copy of Henry James’s The Wings of the Dove inspired her to study English at Columbia, how she coined “narrative medicine” and what it means to her, which writers she likes to teach and which she doesn’t, what she tells people who can’t decide between medicine and literature, and the proven health benefit for physicians who study narrative medicine.
