More than 150 undergraduates, graduates, and new professionals representing 25 colleges and universities from the tri-state region attended the NASPA Careers in Student Affairs Conference at Columbia University on October 26.
The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the leading association for the advancement, health, and sustainability of the student affairs profession, and Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies (SPS) presented the event.
The full-day conference brought awareness to career opportunities in the field of higher education and student affairs in areas including Student Life, Student Services, Student Health, Career Services, Civic Engagement, Fraternity/Sorority Life, Residence Life, and Leadership Development.
Columbia’s Executive Vice President of University Life, Professor Suzanne Goldberg, and Dr. Tatum Thomas, Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs for SPS, delivered keynote addresses, and Tiffany Onorato-Hughes, SPS Executive Director of Student Engagement, hosted the event.
The agenda featured 12 educational sessions led by 29 dynamic presenters who are thought-leaders in student affairs.
The sessions included:
- “Future Doctor Crew: What They Don't Tell You About Obtaining a Doctorate When Life Gets in the Way,” presented by Tiffany Onorato-Hughes, Dr. Naureen Madhani (SPS Associate Director of Academic Administration), Dr. Annette Bhatia (SPS Director of Student Services), and Yadira Ramos-Herbert (Dean of Students, Columbia Law School)
- “Enhancing the Student and Alumni Experience: Launching and Managing High Impact Collaborations and Programs,” presented by Ken Catandella (Senior Executive Director, Columbia Alumni Association and University Relations), Dr. Tatum Thomas, and Amanda Nelson (SPS Executive Director of Development and Alumni Affairs)
- “[Insert Emoji of Choice Here]: Using Emotional Intelligence as a Student Affairs Leadership Tool,” presented by Jason Joyce (SPS Assistant Director of Student Life)
