Alain Biem

Lecturer; Head of Data Science, S&P Global, Market Intelligence

Dr. Alain Biem has extensive experience in generating machine learning value and an outstanding academic record.

Dr. Biem was previously at Wayfair, where as Director of Data Science, he was in charge of the techniques for personalization and computer vision. As VP of Analytics at Opera Solutions, LLC, a Big Data consulting company, Dr. Biem was managing a team of data scientists for the delivery of advanced solutions for customers in Retail, Banking, and Entertainment.

Dr. Biem spent many years at IBM Research as a senior researcher and project lead in cognitive (AI) computing, machine learning, and business modeling where his received many awards for his contribution to the IBM business.

Dr. Biem spent his early career as a researcher at ATR (Advanced Telecom Research) in Japan, contributing in some the early work in the field of speech recognition and deep learning. He has published numerous papers and books chapters in machine learning and pattern recognition and is actively involved in academia as a Doctoral Thesis advisor and adjunct professor.
