You are the chief governance officer at BoardSource, which supports nonprofits across the country. How does this inform your teaching?
I want students to get excited about contributing exceptional leadership to the sector—whether they start nonprofits, lead them or volunteer. It's our goal to create a pipeline of individuals who have bright, innovative ideas and a passion for nonprofits.
How does your background as a lawyer support this goal?
My legal experience gives me the knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to this sector. Without that legal framework, nonprofits can find themselves in trouble. There are issues of personal liability and even loss of tax-exempt status. So, we want to equip our students with the knowledge they need to succeed.

I am the core chair of Young, Black and Giving Back (YBGB). It's core mission is to equip, inspire and empower young black professionals, influencers, social entrepreneurs, and activists to invest in changing their communities through civic leadership and philanthropy. One of the ways we're getting the word out is to hold summits. Though small, they have been successful and continue to generate buzz. I honestly feel the best is yet to come.
