Are “VIP” Patients Worth Breaking Hospital Protocols?

When a celebrity or member of royalty is admitted to the hospital, the typical relationship between doctor and patient can be turned on its head, says Robert Klitzman, Master of Science in Bioethics program director, in a recent Boston Globe article.

Klitzman, who first noted the phenomenon of “VIP Syndrome” while writing his book When Doctors Become Patients, added, “Normally a doctor has authority and professional expertise. Celebrities are viewed as gods. If you have a celebrity, you are a mere doctor.”
