Dr. Klitzman: Genetic Tests Don’t Tell All

In NBC News, Robert Klitzman, director of the graduate program in Bioethics at Columbia University, says that medical professionals shouldn’t base decisions about their patients solely on widely available genetic tests.

Recently, John R. Brown, a patient with bipolar disorder was nearly driven to suicide when a doctor altered his medication, prompted by the results of a DNA test.

"Not only polygenetic influences, but life circumstances, and interpersonal and environmental interactions can shape many mental health conditions,” Dr. Klitzman said.
