Why did you choose the Master of Professional Studies in Insurance Management at the Columbia School of Professional Studies?

I chose this program over other universities due to its uniqueness. Many colleges offer an MBA with an Insurance or Risk Management specialization, but not at the level of an Ivy League institution like Columbia. The instructors are current or retired C-suite executives, and they have walked the walk. The MBA curriculum is very general, and the classes typically offered did not excite me. I wanted a well-rounded education from a top-tier school that had instructors who were successful outside of academia and who wanted to come and teach what they had learned throughout their successful careers. That is the definition of thought leadership.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to prospective students?

One piece of advice I would give to prospective students: This program has changed my life. I have learned a variety of topics and issues within the insurance industry, but the instructors challenge my view and inspire me to learn and conquer more. Each cohort comes from various backgrounds, and I urge you to take time to learn other people’s thought processes and be open-minded because you might learn something that you have never thought of before.

What are the benefits of this asynchronous program from a learning and networking perspective?

Asynchronous learning in this program offers flexibility, allowing students to customize their learning around their schedules. This personalized approach deepens understanding and encourages active participation. Networking benefits are substantial; students connect globally, engaging in diverse discussions and collaborative projects. The online format fosters organic networking opportunities, leading to lasting friendships and a robust online learning experience.

How have you been able to integrate what you have learned in the program into the workplace? Please give a specific example if applicable.

Many examples were introduced during the program, such as creating an operational playbook, which allowed me to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies and reduce the manual work for employees, which leads to the work-life balance that they deserve. Learning how artificial intelligence can enhance the insurance industry but also be a burden if not regulated. There is not just one thing I use every day because everything I have learned from the program applies to my work day in and day out. If you want to learn critical topics in insurance but also be able to question and think on your own to challenge the status quo, then this program is for you.
