Insurance Management student Warren Ting (’24SPS) has been named the first recipient of a scholarship from the Dennis A. Baker Insurance Advancement Fund. The Columbia University Insurance Management master's program established the Dennis A. Baker Insurance Advancement Fund with a generous gift from the Capstone Healthcare Econometrics Research Foundation. The fund was named in honor of the late Dennis A. Baker, the founder of both the Capstone Consulting Group, LLC, and the Foundation, organizations that developed research in health-care delivery, economics, statistics, and mathematical analysis.
“The recipient of this scholarship is a champion of the insurance industry through their studies, profession, and volunteer work,” says Insurance Management Program Director Teresa Chan. “We need strong voices to reinforce the importance and value of insurance in not only business but society at large, and Warren enthusiastically fulfills that mission. We are happy to support Warren in his intellectual pursuits while he gives back to our community so extensively.”
Ting is currently in his second semester of the Insurance Management program and “loving every minute of it,” he says. He has been working in the insurance industry for more than 22 years and is currently the VP of underwriting at HTM Insurance Company, a property and casualty mutual insurance company. Over the past 15 years, he has given back to the industry by teaching insurance courses at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto and promoting the insurance industry as a career ambassador to high school students, college students, and career changers.
At Columbia, he is actively involved in the SPS Student Government and is currently the program representative for the Insurance Management program.
“Awarding me this wonderful scholarship is welcome news to both my family and me,” says Ting. “It takes a portion of the financial burden of tuition off at a time when everyday living and providing for my family is costing more. I will never forget this generosity and will continue to pay it forward in the insurance industry and to future generations of insurance professionals.”
Ting is a first-generation Chinese Canadian residing in the greater Toronto area. “One of my dreams was to attend an Ivy League college,” says Ting, “and having the opportunity to attend Columbia and serve in student government is a dream fulfilled.”
The program hopes to extend similar scholarship support to deserving students in the future. It welcomes interest from those in the industry, including our Corporate Advisory Network members, to help us in this effort to sponsor future scholarships. Foundations, professional associations, corporations, alumni, students, and other individuals who would like to provide support may contact Columbia SPS Major Gifts Officer Reshma D.
