Top Scholar-Practitioner Leading Applied Analytics Program

The career of Kitty Kay Chan, Ph.D., new Academic Director of the Master of Science in Applied Analytics program at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies, has ranged from scholarship to state and federal government positions, as well as leading roles in the private sector.

Prior to joining the program, she was Chief Data Analytics Officer for New York State, spearheading all data analysis across State agencies. Dr. Chan also served as Chief Economist at the New York State Department of Financial Services, which supervises and regulates thousands of banks, insurance companies, public pensions, and other financial institutions with assets over $6 trillion.

Dr. Chan also brings her expertise as an economics scholar who has published widely and taught in Columbia’s Sustainability Management program. Her combination of academic expertise and real-world experience is a strong fit for the Applied Analytics program, which emphasizes scholar-practitioner faculty.

She has described her academic and professional work as, “applying economic theories and quantitative methods for practical purposes in business operations, risk management, legal proceedings, law enforcement, policy design, and regulatory oversight.”

Dr. Chan’s leadership coincides with the launch of several exciting new program options, including one to complete the program fully online and another to complete the program through a combination of online coursework and multi-day blocks of intensive study primarily in San Francisco.
