Taking the Leap: How Poorva Desai Brings Leadership and Analytics to SPS

Poorva Desai, a student in the Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS) M.S. in Applied Analytics program, is making the most of her time at Columbia. “I feel so honored to be a part of SPS and the Columbia community as a whole,” she shared.

Born in India and raised in New Jersey, Desai began her academic journey at a community college before graduating from Rutgers Business School with a degree in business analytics and information technology. After working in data analytics for three years, she decided to pursue graduate school. “I wanted to take that next step in my career, but I had never even imagined Columbia was an option,” she admitted. "I took a risk by applying, and it led me here."

During her time at Columbia, Desai has immersed herself in the vibrant SPS community, learning from fellow students with a wealth of industry knowledge, joining groups such as the Applied Analytics Club, and connecting with the international student community.

But her most rewarding experience has been with the SPS Student Government (SPSSG). After starting as an at-large representative and later serving as secretary, Desai will continue her involvement in spring 2026, her final semester at SPS, as president of SPSSG. “I aim to create a community for new students, help them find the resources they need, and work with the administration to address any challenges they may face,” she explained. “My ultimate goal is not only to have a voice but to be a voice for all students.”

Desai also values the networking opportunities that come with SPSSG. From gaining exposure to different industries and paths to engaging directly with the dean on student concerns, she sees her involvement as both personal and professional growth. “It’s a great opportunity, not just for developing skills but for building connections. I would encourage any new student to take that leap of faith, as I did.”

Desai sees her involvement in SPSSG as an opportunity to strengthen her leadership and organizational skills—lessons she hopes to carry into future roles as she takes the next steps in her career.
