Moshmi Sanagavarapu: Using Leadership to Stand Out in a Competitive Field

Moshmi Sanagavarapu (’19SPS, Applied Analytics) has worked with Fortune 500 companies for over seven years and has built international experience in business and market analytics. She has helped businesses reach their goals through her tactical designs and cross-functional collaborations. Prior to her study at Columbia University, Sanagavarapu earned a management degree from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India and a master’s degree in market analytics from Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts. She plans to graduate from the full-time Master of Science in Applied Analytics program at Columbia’s School of Professional Studies later this year and pursue a career in advanced data science and strategy consulting.

What initially attracted you to the Applied Analytics program at Columbia University?

I wanted to gain more exposure to the latest techniques in the field of analytics while building on my knowledge of management tools. I found this program to be a perfect blend of the two, where we have both a technical core that focuses on machine learning in programming languages and a management core that focuses on analytics strategy and leadership.

The full-time program option is useful because it gives me the opportunity to dedicate my time to learning new things and experiencing our Columbia culture.

This program is a perfect blend of machine learning and programming skills, analytics strategy, and leadership.

What type of skills have you been able to build and improve on through the program?

Aside from sharpening my programming skills, which was an integral part of my curriculum, I feel my ability to think on my feet has only grown better and I have become extremely comfortable managing uncomfortable situations. The courses have also increased my knowledge on the latest applications of analytics in different industries, which is very useful. To me, studying at Columbia has been an enriching yet humbling experience. It gave me access to rich resources, peers, and people that made my journey quite satisfying. I have built great professional relations and studied under established professors who have been my guide at various stages.

How have these skills helped you succeed at your job?

Since data understanding has become an important requirement across all industries, machine learning skills coupled with R/Python programming has given me an edge in the job market. In addition, my capstone project gave me an opportunity to work with peers from different parts of the world. This experience was phenomenal and it broadened my outlook on cross-cultural collaboration, which I believe is an incredible quality to possess, especially in today’s work stage. I am now even more comfortable delving into global teams and projects.
