The Change Catalysts: Risk and Insurance Insights has published its first edition! It is produced by the students, alumni, and faculty of the Columbia University Master of Professional Studies in Insurance Management program and represents five years of engagement among industry professionals in an academic setting where not only subject matter knowledge but thought leadership, ideation, and real-world problem-solving are at the core of the program.
In our first edition, there are five articles contributed by students and alumni, most of which come from assignments completed as coursework; one evolved from course deliverable to real-world application with some trial and error. These articles come from the Emerging Risks and Insurance Topics, Applied Research, and Product Pricing & Distribution courses and demonstrate the students’ mastery of what they’ve learned throughout the program and their creativity in addressing current events and issues that are top of mind in the insurance industry.
The articles span the evolution of insurance as the frontiers of space become closer; the integration of artificial intelligence with business; the convergence of environmental standards and traditional business infrastructure; and addressing societal needs arising from overwhelming economic challenges and natural disasters. One guest lecturer draws parallels between fundamental principles in his role as a CEO and his lessons as a karateka.
Our students travel a path during the master’s program that takes them in many different directions, but all with a focus: They create playbooks for the results they want to achieve and explore options along the way, driven toward the optimal solutions. Lecturers often remind students that we equip them with the skill to engage in a thought process that will enable them to make a rational business decision, whether it is a “go” or a “no go.” The articles presented in the journal reflect those journeys, many of which did not end at graduation but continue because our alumni believe in their possibility.
Given the breadth of ideas in this edition and those now in the making, there is no doubt that the art of risk and insurance is dynamic and rewarding. Those who dedicate their careers to this art continue to elevate the industry’s role and responsibility in ensuring our future. This journal is one way we are giving back to the industry that so generously supports the program and our students.
The contributors anticipate and look well into the future for ideas and inspiration. We hope readers will also be so inspired as they follow along the paths of our writers.
