By Taylor Cook, Student in the M.S. in Political Analytics Program, School of Professional Studies
A year ago, I was an undergraduate student at Spelman College with aspirations of furthering my political science degree before attending law school. As I explored various graduate programs, I attended an information session for the M.S. in Political Analytics (POAN) program at Columbia University School of Professional Studies. It was at that moment that I knew this was the right program for me. The intersection of politics and technological advancement fosters innovation, and I recognized that the POAN program would provide the technical skills necessary to become a leader in the field. I applied immediately after the session, and since then, I have been incredibly grateful for my decision.
This program has broadened my academic and professional interests in ways I had not anticipated. As we navigate an increasingly data-driven world, I feel empowered with the analytical skills to contribute meaningfully to policy discussions and decision-making.
The curriculum has been comprehensive, covering topics such as strategic thinking, game theory principles, experiments, data science, campaign and fundraising strategies, and proficiency in software programs like R Studio. In the realm of political science, these subjects come together to build a deeper understanding of society. I have gained insights into voter behavior, engagement strategies, and data analysis techniques that uncover critical trends. What has been most rewarding, however, is applying these concepts to real-world political scenarios, particularly during such a significant election cycle. The coursework has enhanced my ability to understand political strategists, analysts, and commentators, strengthening my capacity to interpret and engage with the political landscape.
One of the most impactful experiences in the program was our recent three-day trip to Washington, D.C. This opportunity allowed us to engage with a range of organizations, providing invaluable insights into the intersection of politics and data analytics. A standout moment from the trip was the networking event at Capitol Hill, where I had the chance to connect with professionals deeply involved in policy-making.
As someone passionate about using data to inform policy decisions, this experience was incredibly inspiring. We spoke with current staff and interns from the offices of congressional representatives, learning about key policy initiatives and the committees they serve on. In turn, we shared insights on how quantitative analysis could enhance their work on the Hill. These discussions reinforced my enthusiasm for political analytics and reassured me that I had made the right decision in joining this program.
The POAN program has not only strengthened my technical and analytical skills but has also provided me with unparalleled real-world experiences that have shaped my academic and professional trajectory. This journey has affirmed my belief in the importance of data-driven policy-making and has equipped me with the tools to contribute meaningfully to the field.
As I continue my journey as a master’s candidate, I am excited about the ways in which this experience is shaping my future. The D.C. trip provided invaluable exposure to the practical implications of political analytics, reinforcing my passion. Each course and hands-on opportunity has deepened my technical expertise while sharpening my strategic and critical thinking. I am confident this degree will be an essential foundation for my career. One that will enable me to bridge gaps, tell a story through data analytics, and ensure that decisions are informed and impactful. I look forward to continuing my growth within this program and am confident that I am on the right path to making a lasting impact in the world of politics.
