Gifts of Securities

Gifts of appreciated stocks and bonds are popular among Columbia alumni and friends. If you are considering a donation of $1,000 or more, there are many tax advantages to giving securities.

Endowed Gifts

An endowment gift is a donation that is given with the intent to preserve the original value of the gift, and to grow it over time. The funds are held in perpetuity and invested, and the accumulated appreciation and income on the investment is used to fund an annual distribution. Please contact us to design the most meaningful gift to meet their goals at the email below: spsgiving [[at]] columbia [[dot]] edu

Planned Giving

Planned gifts offer a variety of benefits for both donors and Columbia. There are several options that allow you to support Columbia while meeting other financial goals.

Donor Advised Funds

SPS welcomes gifts from Donor Advised Funds (DAFs). A DAF is a charitable giving program that allows you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to support Columbia University School of Professional Studies.  You may recommend donations from your DAF to go towards specific programs and/or initiatives at the School you are most passionate about.

Please be aware that IRS limitations and regulations prohibit any benefits, such as tickets or items, be received by the donor when giving through their financial institution’s donor-advised fund. Please visit your DAF’s website to submit your gift recommendation. Here is some additional information you’ll need to provide: 1. The amount of your gift and 2. The name of the specific fund at the School that you would like to support. Checks must be made payable to Columbia University and mailed to the address: Office of Development and Alumni Relations, School of Professional Studies, Columbia University, 33 W 60th Street, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10023

The tax identification number (EIN) for Columbia University is 13-5598093. If you have questions, you or your DAF can contact us at at the email below: spsgiving [[at]] columbia [[dot]] edu

Hong Kong Fund and UK Gift Aid

Donors who pay taxes in other countries should review local tax laws and regulations or consult a professional tax advisor before making a gift.

Donors in Hong Kong may give to Columbia and receive tax benefits through our Columbia University Hong Kong Fund registered under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

For those based in the United Kingdom, Columbia established the Columbia UK Fund Limited to help donors with tax relief. If you pay UK income taxes, your gift to this fund (in Sterling, US Dollars, or Euros) is eligible for Gift Aid relief, which increases the donor’s philanthropic impact.
