Sam Gong
Part-Time Lecturer
Sam Gong is a corporate compliance scholar-practitioner, enterprise risk management professional, educator, and consultant. Throughout his career, Sam has consulted with and advised Fortune 500 Corporations, Michelin-Star Restaurants, Venture-Backed Startups, and Governmental Organizations on compliance frameworks and strategies.
Sam currently serves as a Lecturer in the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Program at Columbia University, teaching courses related to risk management and financial regulations to master students. Additionally, he is appointed as a researcher at The British University in Dubai (BUiD)’s Centre for Risk and Innovation where he works with scholars in the Middle East Region to develop mitigation strategies to combat climate change risks.
Sam brings to the classroom years of academic and professional experience in regulatory compliance, legal research, higher education, marketing consulting, and public relations. Before becoming a lecturer, he was an associate for several courses in the ERM program, including Traditional Risk Management Practices, External Stakeholder Requirements, Risk Regulations in Finance, and Capstone.
Sam has extensive experience in the field of legal compliance, where he promotes responsible leadership and advises high-level decision-making. Notably, Sam serves as a compliance advisor to the Road and Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA). He has developed a climate risk response and decision-making framework that is compliant with the COP 28 Multi-Hazard Early Warning System and the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals for the RTA. Earlier in his career, Sam served as a compliance team lead at the University of Washington Seattle, where he ensured regulatory compliance for grand events and built data privacy protection and compliance review frameworks based on the Family Educational Records and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Prior to his career in legal compliance, Sam worked for more than five years in the marketing consulting and public relations industries. A tri-lingual intercultural communicator who can speak English, French, and Mandarin Chinese, he served as the marketing consultant and assistant program producer at iQIYI.com., one of the largest online video platforms in China. Sam also worked at Chinese Radio Seattle Inc. as a senior radio host and program producer, managing four radio programs and leading the campus recruiting process.
Sam graduated as a Top-5 Student from Columbia University’s Enterprise Risk Management Program with a Master of Science degree. At Columbia, he also completed the Pedagogical Lab Training and earned a Certificate in Pedagogy. Before moving to New York, Sam obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing Communication at the University of Washington Seattle. In 2019, as part of an academic exchange program, Sam studied at Peking University Law School in Beijing.
Sam Gong is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) Antitrust Law Section, where he participates in and contributes to research and meetings regarding Antitrust Laws and Merger Regulations. Sam also sits on the American Bar Association's Merger & Acquisition Committee.
Sam is a member of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) and the Institute of Strategic Risk Management (ISRM).
