Mario Porras
Strategic Communication Program Representative
Mario Antonio Porras is a communications leader, classically trained vocalist, and former professional volleyball player who brings creativity and strategic discipline to student advocacy. Originally from El Paso, Texas, he draws on his varied experiences to lead with thoughtful preparation and adaptability. His approach centers on bringing people together with a shared sense of purpose.
As the elected Strategic Communication Program Representative in the SPS Student Government (SPSSG), Mario works to amplify voices, and strengthen the talented Columbia community. He also serves as Vice President of Communication for the Latin American Student Club and is a member of Proud Professionals. Professionally, he is a Communications Manager at Columbia Law School, partnering with leadership to translate institutional priorities into clear, engaging communication that is led by his creative direction and editorial strategy.
Mario is pursuing a Master of Science in Strategic Communication at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas and a Master of Music in Classical Voice from the Manhattan School of Music, and received both the Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway Award and the UNT Emerald Eagle Scholarship. Spanish was his first language, while his classical vocal training further expanded his linguistic background through formal diction and performance study in French, Italian, and German, deepening his appreciation for how language, culture, and interpretation shape meaning. That perspective complements his growing interests in ethics and philosophy, which continue to inform his approach to communication and his ambitions in executive leadership, global brand strategy, and teaching. As Program Representative, Mario aims to turn student perspectives into meaningful action while helping his colleagues build lasting connections within Columbia’s intellectually curious and diverse community.
