Columbia SPS CUNY Fellow | The City College of New York (Class of 2023)

Marileidy Pimentel Paniagua, born in the Dominican Republic, is a passionate advocate for environmental justice. After moving to New York City in 2012, she pursued her education at Bronx Community College and the City College of New York (CCNY), earning a bachelor of science in earth and atmospheric sciences with double minors in community change studies and sociology. During her internship at WE ACT for Environmental Justice, she worked on a significant project focused on community gardens, writing a proposal for the Climate Justice Working Group’s food and waste campaign, which highlighted the role of community gardens in urban resilience and food justice in northern Manhattan. As a bilingual community organizer at WE ACT, she focuses on increasing Latino membership and promoting grassroots initiatives. Marileidy’s unique background as a first-generation college student in the U.S., combined with her dedication to environmental education, drives her commitment to building sustainable communities and people. She hopes to accomplish her education at Columbia University to enhance her impact in this field. She is a proud wife, mother, daughter, sister, and aunt of a Dominican family rising in the Bronx.
