Maria McCormack
Senior Lecturer, American Language Program; Associate Director for Assessment
Maria McCormack has been teaching in the American Language Program (ALP) since 1996. She teaches academic ESL courses ranging from intermediate to advanced and specializes in pronunciation and academic writing. McCormack regularly teaches a Training Course for International Teaching Fellows -- international doctoral students who are preparing to teach undergraduates at Columbia. Her research interests include pragmatics, language proficiency scaling, and Natural Language Processing applications to language teaching and assessment. Her departmental work involves the description of ALP language proficiency levels and the connection between course goals, curriculum, and student achievement. Also active in designing English language examinations for the ALP, McCormack wants language tests to contribute to student learning.
