Josh Alexander

Associate Dean of Students

Josh Alexander (he/him) is a native of Chapel Hill, NC. He studied music with a concentration in voice for his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and received his master's degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of South Carolina.  

For the first 5 years of his career, Josh served as a Resident Director at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA and a Community Director at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2011, Josh left the field of Student Affairs and moved to New York City to pursue a career in Musical Theater. Josh was in the ensemble of the national tour of My Fair Lady in 2011-2012, and played the role of "Grandpa Bear" off-broadway in The Berenstain Bears: LIVE in 2012-2013.

In September 2013, Josh returned to Student Affairs, serving as the Area Coordinator for Integrated Learning Communities (ILCs) at Fordham University. Josh first joined the Columbia University community through his work at the affiliate school Barnard College in August 2014. At Barnard, Josh served as the Associate Director for Residential Life and Pre-College Programs for 2 academic years, and subsequently was promoted to Senior Associate Director for the next 3 years. In his role as Sr. AD, Josh oversaw all the recruitment and training initiatives for the Residential Life department, as well as all of the protocols for crisis management and student conduct. 

In September 2019, Josh moved to New Jersey and served as the Director of Residence Education and Staff Development for Rutgers University, New Brunswick. In this role, Josh oversaw staff recruitment, diversity initiatives and living-learning communities for a campus of 16,000 residents. In November 2021, Josh returned to Columbia serving as the Director of Student Conduct for all 17 schools. In August 2023, Josh joined the SPS team as the Associate Dean of students. 

Outside of Higher Education, Josh is a husband, proud cat dad of two, and fills his free time traveling, reading voraciously and running marathons.
