Joanne Mantell, Ph.D.

Lecturer, Bioethics; Professor of Clinical Psychology (in Psychiatry), Columbia University

Joanne E. Mantell, Ph.D. is a research scientist at the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies and a Professor of Clinical Psychology (in Psychiatry). With the HIV Center since 1999, she has worked extensively in the US as well as in Nigeria, South Africa, and China.

Currently, Dr. Mantell is the Principal Investigator of studies on female condom promotion among South African students, sexual and reproductive decision-making among HIV-positive people, and perspectives on medical male circumcision. In recent years, she has also conducted studies of immigrant religious organizations in New York, anal sex practices among women and men in South Africa, HIV risk among migrant entertainment industry workers in Eastern China, and on training service providers in dual protection counseling in China.
