Frank Brown is a respected figure in hockey communications whose career has spanned journalism and executive leadership at the NHL. Beginning in 1970, he wrote his first paid article for a New York Rangers program and then went on to report for The Associated Press, covering iconic moments including the Montreal Canadiens’ dynasty, the 1980 “Miracle on Ice,” and multiple Stanley Cup championships.
In 1980, he joined the New York Daily News, where he worked as a beat reporter and columnist until 1998. That year he transitioned from journalism into the NHL’s front office as VP of Media Relations, eventually rising to the role of Group Vice President of Content Integration. In this capacity, he became a key partner to Commissioner Gary Bettman, helping to shape the league’s messaging and oversee its communications strategy.
Brown retired in 2018 after nearly five decades covering and communicating hockey. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored in 2019 with the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame, which celebrates distinguished hockey journalism.
