Derek McCracken, M.S., M.A.

Lecturer, Narrative Medicine

Derek McCracken, MS, MA is a Lecturer in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University where he co-leads the Social Justice in Narrative Medicine team, and "Activating Racial Justice Through Narrative Negotiation," an interdisciplinary project funded by the Columbia Provost Seed Grant Anti-Racism Initiative. The project's aim is to expand narrative methodology into the realm of anti-racist negotiation and conflict resolution. He facilitates narrative medicine workshops online for the "Connections in Narrative Medicine" program (you can register at narrativemedicine.blog).

Derek's current narratology portfolio includes working as a team lead facilitator at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he also serves as a patient advocate for the Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention program. He is a board member of SayAh, a New York-based health literacy nonprofit, and a member of the Intellus Worldwide Health Literacy Initiative. He received his BA and MA in English/Professional Writing from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

In his free time, he attends and reviews shows for Broadway World, plays tennis, and monitors the unruly behavior of  his recently adopted Havanese dogs, Vito and Bella.
