Editors from STAT, Scientific American, Vice News, Quanta Will Discuss Lessons Learned While Reporting on COVID-19

Join SPS in the next installment of Reporter Nights, a dynamic live series exploring the mass media’s coverage of the biggest science story of our lifetime: the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reporter Nights Truthtelling

On 3/9 (RSVP here), Sustainability Management Lecturer Claudia Dreifus and students in her class will interview a panel of top science editors and reporters on their career paths, as well as the highlights and challenges of their day-to-day work. Panelists include Co-Founder and Executive Editor of STAT Rick Berke, Co-Founder and Editor in Chief of The Open Notebook Siri Carpenter, Senior Multimedia Editor at Scientific American Jeffery DelViscio, Managing Editor at Inside Climate News Erica Goode, Vice News Producer Tony Lin, Deputy Editor at Quanta Magazine John Rennie, and Editor in Chief of Undark Magazine Tom Zeller.

Dreifus, a contributor to The New York Review of Books and The New York Times, will moderate thought-provoking conversations analyzing the pandemic’s origins, the resulting issues in science communications highlighted by the crisis, and how lessons learned from the pandemic can be applied to other environmental-related disasters.

Presented by Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies’ M.S. in Sustainability Management program, Reporter Nights represent another way Columbia is bringing its world-class community of scholars and practitioners to students.

Previous Reporter Nights featured such speakers as John Schwartz, who covers climate change for The New York Times; Naomi Oreskes, Harvard science historian and the author of Why Trust Science and Merchants of Doubt; and Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Staff Writer at The New Yorker, and the author of The Sixth Extinction and Field Notes from a Catastrophe.
