Perspectives from Local Government on the Future of Work

Perspectives from Local Government Event with Kelly Schulz

Perspectives from Local Government on the Future of Work—An evening with Maryland Secretary of Commerce Kelly M. Schulz

Key Topics: Local Government, Future of Work, Leadership, Labor Policy, Workforce Development, Gig Economy

As so much of everyday life has rapidly shifted into the digital world, state and local government agencies have emerged as pillars of support providing resources, policy, and guidance to communities, schools, and organizations, both large and small. With local levels of government having such impact in facilitating the rapidly evolving nature of work, it is important to understand the perspectives coming from the public sector.

In a state whose diverse industries range from biotech to poultry farming or defense and aerospace to working watermen and seafood, Secretary Kelly M. Schulz from the Maryland Department of Commerce has a unique perspective and vantage point to watch the future of work unfold. Join us on Wednesday, February 17th at 8:00 pm ET for a conversation with Secretary Schulz, led by IKNS lecturer, Jordon Sims.

The conversation will center on the future of work and how government and industry have been responding, including:

  • shifts in the core areas of work, workplace, and workforce;
  • in-demand and emerging skills in the public sector workforce;
  • the evolution in the nature of careers with the government; and
  • the importance of intangible value drivers in performance

About the Conversations that Matter series

“One good conversation can shift the direction of change forever. “

Linda Lambert

Conversations that Matter is a series of public education events that bring the thinkers, doers, and experts of the IKNS community together with a broader audience of curious minds from across Columbia University and beyond. These conversations tackle topics that are not only timely and relevant, but also at the core of the Information and Knowledge Strategy discipline. Through the fruitful exchange of ideas and the sharing of knowledge by industry experts, distinguished academics, and thought innovators at the leading edge of their fields, we hope to ignite further discussion and action leading to positive change in organizations, communities, and industry.

This series is brought to you by Columbia University’s M.S. in Information and Knowledge Strategy (IKNS) program as part of the University’s ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge with the purpose of moving careers, communities, and markets forward.

About the IKNS Program

Columbia’s M.S. in Information and Knowledge Strategy (IKNS) transforms knowledge-based practitioners into knowledge-driven leaders. Interdisciplinary in nature, this degree has its underpinnings in information and knowledge management, organizational development, social science, psychology, and economics. The IKNS program marries research and theory with the lived experiences of distinguished academics and leading practitioners, creating a curriculum that educates the next generation of executives on how to effectively leverage the knowledge capital of their organizations to drive growth, productivity, and societal impact. Students of the IKNS program will develop a holistic approach to leading people and organizations while mastering proficiency in collaboration, strategic thinking, innovative design and entrepreneurship, evidence-based decision making, and digital transformation.
