The M.S. in Nonprofit Management program held a discussion: Black Philanthropy from Jim Crow to Today featuring special guest Dr. Tyrone McKinley Freeman, award-winning author of Madam C.J. Walker's Gospel of Giving: Black Women's Philanthropy During Jim Crow. 

This discussion -- led by Dr. Greg Witkowski, Senior Lecturer in Nonprofit Management -- included lessons for today as well as insights in to the fascinating life of Madam C.J. Walker, America's first female self-made millionaire who established a legacy of giving while living.

More About Madam C.J. Walker

Founder of a beauty empire, Madam C. J. Walker was celebrated as America's first self-made female millionaire in the early 1900s. Known as a leading African American entrepreneur, Walker was also devoted to an activist philanthropy aimed at empowering African Americans and challenging the injustices inflicted by Jim Crow.
