You've got a background spanning twenty-five years in fundraising, with many renowned organizations. Tell us a little about it.
I've worked with everyone from the National Audubon Society to the New York Public Library and Planned Parenthood. I'm currently the Director of Gift Planning and Special Campaigns for the American Civil Liberties Union.
Is there a key insight you share in your classes from your experience?
You have to be a good partner, especially when you're working on major gifts. This means asking smart questions, actively listening, and then asking more and even better questions, until you understand your donor. People with the wealth to make major gifts often have complex assets, and multiple factors go into their philanthropic decisions. A transformational gift must be the right fit for a donor.
What should students interested in Nonprofit Management know about your area of expertise?
Personal solicitation of major donors is one of the highest—and most marketable—skills we can learn as nonprofit leaders. Planned giving expertise extends that dynamic even further. It's an exciting challenge.
