Christopher J. Samuels

Lecturer; COO, SharedMind/Oceans, SharedMind/Space, and SharedMind/MKAT (Modular Knife & Tool); Senior Manager, Liminality

Chris Samuels has more than twenty-five years of experience in designing, managing and delivering industrial, customer and product research and managing startups for inventors and investors. He is a co-founder of SharedMind, a private investor/inventor led think tank.

Samuels is the co-founder of Liminality, Inc., and founder of its predecessor company, CommunitasOnline. Both companies were active in the development of survey research on the Web and the development of Computer Aided Language Context Analysis Technology (CALCAT). Today, there are some CALCAT expert systems that support the transformation into quantifiable data of the ideas and beliefs found in full-text responses to qualitative (open-ended) questions. CALCAT applies the engineering principle of “total traceability” to survey research, ensuring that clear connections between the ideas/beliefs in full-text responses are linked to data derived through analysis.

Samuels established the strategic marketing and customer segmentation work for both companies. He has led assignments with numerous Fortune 500 corporations covering a wide range of industries, including financial and consumer services, healthcare, entertainment, and high technology. Some of his more prominent engagements include John Hancock, Apple, 3M, Bank of America, Disney, IBM, J.P.Morgan, A.T.Kearney, Fidelity Investments, CARE, Nortel Networks, Charles Schwab, T. Rowe Price, Chase Manhattan Bank, University of California Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley Bank, The Knights of Columbus, Ace Hardware and Intuit.

Previously, he directed the Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG) business and technical research facility, Business Data Analysts. This unit specialized in advanced research applications and analytical support for BCG. For two years, he worked closely with Bruce Henderson, founder and Chairman of BCG.

Before working with BCG, Samuels, in partnership with Mitsubishi International, was a director of Information for Business, an industrial research firm. There, he oversaw the development of research methodologies while working with the firm's clients on new applications of commercial and industrial research.

He began his career in business at McKinsey & Co., management consultants, where he was Research Director and Manager of the firm's largest research facility. His work there involved extensive research design and management as well as responsibility for the development of what became a leading management research facility in New York City. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University.
