Marc Blatter

Lecturer of Finance

Marc Blatter encourages students to think of accounting as more than just debits and credits. Using recent financial statements and current events covering everything from large public companies to small local charities, we will openly discuss all parts of the financial statement. This includes the notes to the financial statements, as well as the balance sheet, cash flow, and income statement. All in-class examples are supported by real-world examples keeping the class relevant and engaging.

Blatter has been teaching accounting for the past seven years at Columbia University. Prior to Columbia University, he taught at Marymount Manhattan College. Courses include intermediate accounting levels I and II, as well as financial accounting.

His career began as an asset manager at a boutique real estate firm specializing in low-income housing. Blatter then spent four years working in public accounting at Ernst and Young where he primarily audited large hedge funds, mutual funds, and management companies. He also became a New York State Certified Public Accountant at this time. After Ernst and Young, Blatter joined a large commodity hedge fund where he was responsible for the accounting for both the funds and the management company. He currently serves as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer for Gates Capital Management, Inc.

Blatter was awarded the Ron Forbes award for Excellence in Finance during his junior year at the University of Albany, State University of New York, and the Most Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in Finance upon graduation.
